As Christmas draws near, it's important to remember the significance of being mindful and responsible during this joyous time.
The holiday season brings together families, children, delicious food, cherished moments with loved ones, an abundance of chocolates, and of course, the excitement of presents! Amidst all the hustle and bustle, it's easy to overlook electrical safety. Here at Allied Electrical, Bristol we want nothing more than for our customers to have the most magical Christmas ever. However, we also prioritise the safety of you and your family throughout the festive season. Don't worry, it's as simple as following a few easy steps:
Using appropriate Christmas lights
Opt for indoor LED lights for your interior decorations and choose weatherproof lights for your outdoor displays. Remember, outdoor lights should have a minimum IP44 rating, but it's even better if they have an IP65 rating. IP ratings determine the level of protection against elements like water, so the higher the number, the better the protection. Keep your home and loved ones safe this holiday season.
Switch off the lights!
Don't forget to switch off your Christmas lights and blow out any candles before leaving the house or going to sleep. By turning off the lights, you not only save energy but also minimise the chances of them overheating. It's always better to be safe and prevent any fire hazards, so remember to switch off those lights!
Real Christmas trees
Did you decide to go for a real Christmas tree this year? Keep in mind that real trees are more prone to catching fire compared to artificial ones. To prevent any overheating, it is crucial to solely use indoor LEDs. Additionally, make sure to water your real Christmas tree regularly to prevent it from drying out. It's also wise to place your tree away from any heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces.
Using extension leads responsibly
It is crucial to exercise responsible usage of extensions at all times, even during the festive season. Overloading extension leads can pose a significant risk as they may easily overheat, thereby increasing the chances of a fire hazard. Prior to utilising your extension lead, it is essential to visually inspect the wiring and sockets for any signs of damage or discoloration. If you detect a burning smell while using it, please promptly unplug the lead and dispose of the equipment safely. Additionally, extension leads can also present a major tripping hazard. Therefore, when in use, ensure that the lead is securely tucked away to prevent any unwanted incidents. After all, nobody wants to spend their Christmas in A&E! Remember to never run extension leads beneath rugs and consider using cord protectors if necessary.
The big feast…
The most anticipated moment of all! Christmas dinner is undeniably the highlight of Christmas festivities. Amidst all the hustle and bustle of preparations and cooking, it's crucial not to overlook safety measures. Don't forget to check your fire alarms well in advance of the big day, just to be on the safe side! It's also wise to have spare batteries handy. And while you're cooking up a storm, remember to keep any flammable items, like tea towels, far away from the hob area. Safety first, and enjoy a delightful Christmas feast!
